1. PORTUGUESE:

 

  • Vasco da Gama discovered a new sea route to India via                                             Cape of Good Hope (Southern tip of South Africa) in 1498 AD.

 

  • He first arrived at Kapad near in

Kerala Calicut (Kozhikode) 17 May 1498

and landed in port of Calicut on

 

  • He was cordially received by King Zamorin

(King of Calicut)

  • Saint Gabriel was the name of the ship                                                                     in which Vasco da Gama travelled.

 

  • The arrival of Vasco da Gama on the Indian scene was not liked at all by the Arabs. They started rumours of many kinds against the Portuguese.             Finding the situation hard, Vasco da Gama left India after a stay of about three months.

 

  • In 1501,Vasco da Gama second time came to India for the Cannanore and founded a factory at 1503 and returned to Portugal
  • In spite of the  opposition from the Arabs, the Portuguese were able to establish their trading centres at calicut, cochin and Cannoneer  and they treated the Arabs with cruelty and oppression.

 

 

Important Portuguese Governors

 

 

Francisco Almeida (1504 – 1509)•

 

  • 1st Governor or the Portuguese in India

 

  • He introduced ‘The Policy of Blue Water’

 

  • In 1507 the Portuguese arrived at Madras. The city finally got its name from their leader Madra.

Alfonso d Albuquerque (1509 – 1515)

 

  • He arrived in India in 1503
  • The real founder of the Portuguese authority in India.
  • In1510, he defeated Bijapur Sultan Goa and captured
  • He introduced ‘Policy of Imperialism’
  • In 1511, a friendly treaty with Srikrishana Devaraya.

Nino-da-Cunha (1529 – 1538)

 

  • In1530 Cochin to Goa, he transferred the Portuguese capital in India from
  • He acquired Diu and Bassein in 1535 and Daman in 1559                                 from Bahadur Shah of Gujarat.

 

Martin Alfonso de Souza (1542 – 1545)

 

  • In 1540 the famous Jesuit Saint Fransisco Xavier arrived in India with him.
  • Saint Fransisco Xavier alone converted 7 lakhs fisherman (Goa and Tamil Nadu) into Christianity.
  • His mummy is kept in Goa Church
