Western Disturbance to Bring Snow, Rain to J&K from Friday

Srinagar, Dec 26: An active Western Disturbance is set to affect Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh starting Friday afternoon, bringing snowfall and rain to various regions. The weather system is expected to persist until Saturday afternoon, with its impact being most significant in the higher-altitude areas, as reported by NVI.

In Jammu, districts like Kathua, Doda, Ramban, and Kishtwar are likely to experience 1 to 4 inches of snowfall in elevated areas, while extreme altitudes could receive up to 10 inches. The plains of Jammu are forecasted to get light to moderate rain, with milder effects anticipated in Poonch and Rajouri.

For Kashmir, light snowfall is predicted in parts of south Kashmir, particularly in Kulgam and Anantnag, with a 25–30% probability. Central Kashmir might also witness light rain or snowfall, although the chances are lower at 15%. Most parts of north Kashmir are expected to remain dry during this period.

Ladakh, too, is expected to witness moderate snowfall, especially in Kargil and Leh districts.

Independent weather forecaster Faizan Arif described the system as “moderate in intensity,” noting, “There is an 85% chance of significant snowfall in the higher reaches of Jammu, a 25–30% probability for south Kashmir, and a slight chance of light precipitation in central Kashmir. Moderate snow showers are likely in Kargil and Leh in Ladakh.”

Residents have been urged to exercise caution, particularly in higher-altitude regions where travel disruptions could occur due to snow accumulation and slippery roads.

The anticipated snowfall is likely to bring joy to tourists visiting the region but could pose challenges for local residents. Authorities have advised everyone to prepare adequately for the expected weather conditions.
